La commission Internationale d’histoire de la Révolution française membre du Comité International des Sciences Historiques va décerner le prix « Zeev Sternhell » tous les 5 ans, à partir de la conférence célébrant le 100e anniversaire du CISH à Leipzig au mois d’août 2026, à l’ouvrage qui aura renouvelé de la façon la plus originale et rigoureuse les études internationales, transnationales et globales sur les Révolutions de la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

Le prix sera doté dans un premier temps de 2000 euros.

Cette récompense se nomme Zeev Sternhell ( 1935-2020) car cet historien israélien n’a cessé de défendre les valeurs des Lumières et de la Révolution française pour construire son œuvre contre toutes sortes de fascismes et les catastrophes qu’ils ont entrainé dans le monde depuis le début du XXe siècle.

De plus et surtout, Zeev Sternhell, dont la famille a été détruite par la Shoah, n’a cessé de lutter pour que les deux peuples palestinien et israélien, deux nations, deux Etats, Israël et la Palestine puissent vivre en coexistence pacifique. Membre fondateur du mouvement israélien ‘La paix maintenant » (Shalom Akhchav). Il n’a cessé de militer en faveur d’une solution pacifique luttant contre toute forme de discrimination contre les Palestiniens, et pour que la démocratie l’emporte en Israël.

Au moment où le monde se divise, où les régimes démocratiques sont confrontés aux montées des extrêmes droites et à la xénophobie et au racisme, à l’affirmation des valeurs Anti-Lumières, auxquelles Zeev Sternhell consacra un ouvrage majeur, la communauté des historiennes et des historiens de la Révolution française et des Révolution du XVIIIe siècle, doit se mobiliser et monter ses valeurs d’engagement citoyen et de rigueur scientifique, d’humanisme cosmopolite et de rigueur méthodologique.

C’est pour cette raison et pour décerner le prix du livre ayant le mieux renouvelé la vision et les connaissances sur l’aspect mondial de la et des Révolutions française, qu’un appel est lancé à toutes les historiennes et les historiens qui depuis 2019 ( pour tenir compte des perturbations liées au Covid) aurait publié un livre capable de donner un sens transnational, international et global des Révolutions de la fin du XVIIIe siècle

Les candidatures sont à adresser à Pierre Serna, président de la CIHRF, ( pierreserna@wanadoo.fr) avant le 20 mars, avec un CV et la présentation de l’ouvrage en deux pages, ainsi que sa version électronique.

Le jury sera composé du bureau directeur de la CIHRF et d’historien-nes spécialistes de la période. Le prix sera remis le 28 aout 2026 pendant la conférence tenue à l’occasion du centenaire du CISH à l’Université de Leipzig.

The Zeev Sternhell Prize for history of Revolution

The International Commission for the History of the French Revolution (https://cihrf.info/) a member of the International Committee of Historical Sciences, will award the “Zeev Sternhell” prize every five years, starting with the Leipzig centennial conference of the ICHS in August 2026, to the work that has most originally and rigorously renewed international, transnational, and global studies on the revolutions of the late 18th century.

The prize will initially be worth €2,000.

This award is named after Zeev Sternhell (1935-2020) because this Israeli historian never ceased to defend the values of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution in order to build his work against all forms of fascism and the catastrophes they have caused throughout the world since the beginning of the 20th century.

Furthermore, and above all, Zeev Sternhell, whose family was destroyed by the Shoah, fought tirelessly for the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, two nations, two states, Israel and Palestine, to live in peaceful coexistence. He was a founding member of the Israeli movement “Peace Now” (Shalom Akhshav). He has never stopped campaigning for a peaceful solution, fighting against all forms of discrimination against Palestinians and for democracy to prevail in Israel.

At a time when the world is divided, when democratic regimes are confronted with the rise of the far right, xenophobia, and racism, and the affirmation of anti-Enlightenment values, to which Zeev Sternhell devoted a major work, the community of historians of the French Revolution and the revolutions of the later 18th and early 19th century must mobilize and uphold its values of civic engagement and scientific rigor, cosmopolitan humanism, and methodological rigor.

For this reason, and in order to award a prize to the book that has best renewed our vision and knowledge of the global aspect of the French Revolution and other revolutions, we are calling on all historians who, since 2019 (to take into account the disruptions caused by Covid), have published a book capable of giving a transnational, international, and global meaning to the revolutions of the late 18th century.

Applications should be sent to Pierre Serna, president of the CIHRF, ( pierreserna@wanadoo.fr) and Matthias Middell, Secretary General of the CIHRF (middell@uni-leipzig.de), before March 20, with a CV and a two-page presentation of the book, as well as an electronic version.

The jury will be composed of the CIHRF's executive committee and historians specializing in the period. The prize will be awarded on August 28, 2026, during the conference held on the occasion of the CISH's centenary at the University of Leipzig.
